GW chat, lite stand alone
Before mocking and commenting I know very little about programming.
The Idea
A chat feature for GW that doesn't require you to access the game. Like a msn or AIM.
No player features and ofcourse no avatar(toon) in-game. Just a chat system that doesn't require you to have GW running fully.
Why?
I often do work at my computer (strange that, using it for more then just games :P ), and still have GW running to keep in contact with guildies and allies. So I can chat and offer help and assistance.
I know it might be a superfluous idea but hey its a idea's forum

Whoa you guys are sooo overly helpful.
Now I just need to convience my entire Alliance and guild to join and also have IRC going while there playing.
Now back to the suggestion, and ignoring wild tangents.
A guild wars out-game chat system!

I wanted this to happen also, it would be a nice way to log in, and see who is logged in and chat with them, without loading up the whole game. I think its a great idea.
EDIT: maybe this new application could fit and run off a USB thumbdrive or something so you could get in touch with the GW universe at any computer without installing a 3GB+ game.

Reducing GW to the likes of AIM.........
Maybe just finish all your work and then go harass your alliance....

Less sarcasm please.
As guild leader, I have in fact made sure that most of my guildmates know how to access mIRC, and there's actually a push for getting xFire to become our guild's required chat program, for this very reason
The suggestion for out-of-client accessability to GW guild and alliance chat is a good idea, I think.... but when you consider the resources necessary to tap an outside source into that chat and friends list, as well as the time it would take compared with some other upgrades they should be making....
... for the moment, in all seriousness, get your guildmates to idle in your own channel on Gamesurge's IRC (they're free), or encourage more board participation (you have one, right?). MEEP has done it, I know SMS is psychotic about board participation... maybe your guild/alliance should, too.

Well I knew most of that! :P
Not the programming and the you having a life! Do people who play GW get lives... must be an eliet huh?
lol j/ks
Redly
Most guildies play with GW in full screen, so irc would be unnoticed, and some have crap computers they can barely run GW *rolleyes*

IRC channels are a great way to encourage out of game communication in guilds. IRC channels are great for everything.
Seriously, there's many gaming orienteered servers out there and it's very easy to set up a channel and client for users.

It wasn't about out of game communication
It was about a lite chat version for Ingame players and players who couldn't engage in game play!

Not entirely relevant, but I read that Lineage 2 allows you to chat with people using MSN messanger (or something like that) from in game.

This might not be incredibly important, but I sure would like it. I remember having a miranda IM plugin which allowed you to connect to battle.net to talk to your ingame contacts when D2 wasn't running, and it actually was useful.
Therefore,

I like the idea of a channel based lobby for trading and bartering, but unaccociated chat channels or stand alones is just another bandwidth and hardware sink which will dampen Anets resources. Unless it has to do with improving gameplay functions, I say leave the chat channels to yahoo and MSN, Anet needs to conserve their resources.
If this was a monthly subscription game, I could understand the value and cost of this kind of function.....expecially since MMO players need to be in contact with thier game at all times possible, but for this, I think it is truely unneccessary.
Guilds can chat over the guild channel, Alliances can chat over the alliance channel, and we can also use teamspeak, ect. I think it is more important to make a new space for traders and buyers to take their buisiness in order to clear the air of constant advertisements and spam, this would give us much more freedom to converse in the channels we already have.
